Apple recently made a significant change to the naming convention for its software updates. All software versions now carry the number 26, including the new iOS 26. This update brings a significant visual overhaul, in line with Apple's new "Liquid Glass" design. Despite the many new features, many will notice that some features are familiar - especially to users of the competing Android operating system.

Among the first obvious changes in iOS 26 is the lock screen, which now supports 3D wallpapers and automatically adjusts elements on the screen based on the content. The Phone app has also been completely redesigned and updated with new features. One of the main new features is automatic call screening, which uses artificial intelligence to answer calls for you. This feature has been available on Google Pixel phones for some time.

The real-time translation feature is another standout new feature. It works system-wide, including in iMessage. It can also translate speech in real time—even song lyrics in Apple Music. The latter app now also allows for smooth transitions between two songs, which many will surely appreciate.

iMessage finally gets features like threads for individual conversations, typing indicators, automatic spam filtering, and the ability to create polls. Notifications from unknown senders are now muted by default unless you manually enable them. Apple Maps now shows a history of places you've visited, similar to Google Maps. And the new Apple Games section serves as a central location for all the games installed on your device—another move clearly inspired by Google.

The developer version of iOS 26 is now available for Apple iPhone 11 and later. However, features based on Apple's artificial intelligence will only work on iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max and later models. The public beta will be released in July, with the stable version following shortly after. The latter will, of course, be available to all users with supported iPhones.
