An inexpensive robotic arm for aspiring creators

Robotic arms have long been the domain of heavy industry, but Seeed Studio is bringing the technology to a wider audience with its new reBot Arm B601 series. With a starting price of around €1,120, it is a device that is accessible to both professional developers and ambitious DIYers.

The reBot Arm B601 DM is versatile, offering six degrees of freedom, with an additional degree available with a robotic gripper. The entire system is designed to cover a considerable working area. With the gripper installed, the robotic arm reaches a distance of approximately 76.7 cm. In practice, this means that it can easily reach and manipulate objects on a typical desk.

Despite its affordable price, the robotic arm does not skimp on performance. Without a gripper, the arm can lift up to 1.5 kg. The manufacturer advises that when fully loaded, only up to 70 percent of the maximum reach be used to maintain stability. The accuracy of the device is also impressive, at 0.2 mm. This means that the arm will hit the target with minimal deviation when making repeated movements at the same point.

Seeed Studio emphasizes that the reBot Arm project is entirely open source. This applies not only to the software that supports environments such as ROS1, ROS2, Isaac Sim and the Python SDK, but also to the hardware. Users have access to blueprints and templates, which allows them to make certain components themselves, for example using a 3D printer.

The “True Open Source” design includes a full Bill of Materials (BOM), giving developers complete control over the device and customization for specific needs, whether it’s for Embodied AI learning or small-scale automation. The robotic arm is available in a variety of configurations, from components to pre-assembled units, with prices ranging from around €1,400 for a fully equipped kit.
