HP OmniBook 5 attacks MacBook Neo with OLED display and lower price

HP has introduced a new OmniBook 5 14 laptop, which is aimed squarely at Apple's MacBook Neo buyers. The base version costs $699.99 in the US, and for that money it offers an Intel Core 5 315 processor from the Wildcat Lake family, 8 GB of system memory and 256 GB of data storage (SSD). The biggest special feature is the screen. HP has used OLED in all configurations, even the cheapest. The basic 14-inch panel has a resolution of 1920 × 1200 pixels and 300 nits of brightness. A touch screen version will also be available. A more powerful screen with a resolution of 2560 × 1600 is coming in March next year.

The OmniBook 5 can also be equipped with a Core 7 350 processor, up to 16 GB of system memory and a 1 TB SSD. The memory is soldered to the motherboard, so later upgrades are not possible. Ports include two 10 Gbps USB-C, HDMI and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. A 1080p webcam has also been added.

HP has also paid close attention to portability. The case measures just 11.7 millimeters thick and starts at 1.16 kilograms, making the new OmniBook slightly thinner and lighter than the MacBook Neo. It will be available in silver, pink, blue, and green. HP promises up to 42 hours of local video playback, but real-world battery life is expected to be significantly shorter for typical use.

On paper, the OmniBook 5 is primarily focused on the combination of an OLED screen, low weight, and more affordable price. The biggest compromise of the base configuration remains 8 GB of memory, which is already quite modest for a Windows laptop in 2026.
