Google changes rules for accounts with free 15 GB of space

Google previously offered an exception for user accounts with the free 15 GB of storage. Data such as call history, text messages, and device settings did not count towards the free 15 GB of storage within a Google account. Unfortunately, this has changed with the new terms of use. Every backup of your smartphone now actually directly reduces the available space that you share with Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos.

While Google is reassuring that the average user will only "gain" an extra 40MB of space from this change, for those already close to the 15GB limit, that could be a bit of a drain on their storage. This small but significant additional burden means that many people could soon be faced with annoying low-space warnings.

In response to expected user frustration, Google has also introduced more transparent controls. You'll now find new, more granular toggles in Android settings that let you control what data gets backed up. Users can now completely disable backups of call history, SMS/MMS messages, or specific device settings, keeping control over their digital space usage.

If you're one of those who frequently switches devices or is careful to protect every megabyte, we recommend that you check your backup settings as soon as possible. Keeping track of what actually takes up space in the cloud has now become a necessary part of digital hygiene. Given how quickly digital content accumulates, skepticism about Google's "minimal" impact on space is entirely justified, because every megabyte counts.
