ChatGPT reaches a fifth of Google search volume
At a recent event, OpenAI representatives presented surprising data on the growth and use of their popular chatbot. According to them, ChatGPT now processes as many search queries as about a fifth of the total Google search volume. This means that artificial intelligence has established itself as a serious alternative to traditional web search engines in a relatively short time. However, the question remains how the company accurately measures and counts individual queries, since conversations with AI are often quite different from classic short entries in a web search engine.
Users are increasingly entering longer and more personal questions that include a broader context. They are not using the chatbot solely for short keywords. ChatGPT can prepare a comprehensive answer based on a single question, further explain it and adapt it to the user's needs, which significantly changes the current way of searching for information. This is precisely why a direct comparison of the number of queries with Google is somewhat more challenging, since one interaction with the chatbot is not necessarily comparable to one search in a classic search engine.
Despite the impressive numbers, experts warn that it is too early to talk about market takeover. The measurement methodologies used are not fully accessible to outside observers, and Google still maintains an extremely large reach among Internet users. It will also be important to monitor whether OpenAI will be able to convert its current growth into a long-term user habit and maintain their trust.
However, the rapid rise of ChatGPT clearly shows that the way people search for information online is changing. Instead of browsing a list of links, users are increasingly expecting direct answers, additional explanations, and help with more complex tasks. This could also significantly change the business model of online search and advertising in the coming years.
