Gemini takes on the role of co-driver in Google Maps
The digital driving experience is undergoing a major transformation as Google has begun gradually introducing its Gemini artificial intelligence directly into the Google Maps app for Apple CarPlay users, a development that is set to fundamentally change the way drivers use their navigation system while driving.
The update is about allowing users to interact with their smart assistant in a completely natural way, moving away from rigid, well-defined voice commands. During navigation, a new Gemini icon appears on the right side of the CarPlay screen, allowing users to ask more complex questions or make multi-step requests with a single tap. For example, they can simply tell the assistant to find a cozy cafe with a great coffee selection along their route.
Gemini then automatically analyzes the available data and user ratings and suggests the most suitable option. One of the biggest advantages of the system is that it preserves the context of the conversation. The user can immediately ask an additional question, such as “Does the location have parking available?” or “What are the prices?”, and the system will understand that the question refers to the location just suggested.
The main goal of the technology is to reduce distractions while driving. Since communication with the application is done by voice, drivers do not have to take their eyes off the road or scroll through long lists of results. Google has already tested the feature on smartphones and Android Auto, and is now gradually expanding it to Apple's automotive platform. The official launch has begun in the United States, and the first reports of availability are also coming from Europe. To use it, an updated version of the Google Maps application on an iPhone is sufficient.
