This successful event marks the first step in a long-term research project by Google to explore whether space could host a scalable machine learning infrastructure in the future. In the coming weeks, they will collect detailed data directly from orbit. They will study how their TPU processing units respond to the physical stresses of flight, as well as how they withstand the intense radiation and extreme temperature fluctuations of airless space.

The full scientific background and details of this research are described in a professional publication published in the journal Joules. Certain technical features and equipment behavior can only be adequately tested in an actual space environment. The findings obtained during the experimentation will serve as a basis for researchers to further improve and adapt future hardware designs.

The transition from a successful first contact prototype to a truly usable and reliable infrastructure in space is extremely challenging. The team faces many unforeseen challenges before it is clear whether such a technology is even feasible in the long term. The researchers will share new findings as the in-orbit experiments continue.
