In the world of system administration, access to hardware at critical moments is invaluable. GL.iNet's new device, called Comet 5G, solves the biggest problem of classic IP KVM devices, namely the dependence on the local network. The main advantage of this model is the integrated 5G RedCap (Reduced Capacity) receiver, which allows automatic switching to the mobile network if Wi-Fi or wired connection stops working.

Under the hood, there is powerful hardware. The device is powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, and is equipped with 1 GB of DDR3L system memory and 64 GB of internal eMMC memory. Fast local connectivity is provided by a gigabit Ethernet port, and Wi-Fi standards at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies are also supported. On the front of the device is a useful touchscreen with a diagonal of approximately 9.37 centimeters, which shows the user the device status and network information in real time.

The Comet 5G connects to the target computer via an HDMI port for image capture, while the USB-C port provides mouse and keyboard emulation. This gives the administrator full control over the bare-metal system, including changing BIOS settings or recovering from crashed operating systems from anywhere in the world.

Although the official price for the 5G model has not yet been revealed, it is expected to exceed the estimated 185 euros. The device will be available for pre-order soon, which will certainly appeal to businesses where uninterrupted operation is crucial.
