A technological answer to loneliness or an overpriced toy?
Leading Chinese robotics manufacturer UBTech has unveiled a new model, the U1, which represents a major step forward in the field of human-like machines. It is a hyper-realistic humanoid that was designed with a clear goal: to offer companionship and support to single and elderly people who are facing loneliness. The company offers two versions, namely a male and a female form of the robot. Although the appearance closely imitates a human, UBTech explicitly emphasizes that the device is not intended for intimate relationships “for now”.
The main technological advantage of this model is the direct integration of emotional artificial intelligence. The system constantly monitors the owner's well-being via built-in cameras and responds to their signs of fatigue or mental distress. UBTech claims that the U1 is the world's first hyper-realistic humanoid robot that is fully ready for mass production.
This coincides with a broader national strategy in China, where humanoid robots have become a key industry, and the entire sector is increasingly focused on high-tech and general-purpose robotics supported by artificial intelligence. The country has already officially opened its first specialized school for humanoid robotics.
Despite the lofty promises, a certain amount of skepticism is warranted with such complex technology. How reliably a robot will recognize complex human emotions in a real-world environment, and whether algorithms alone can truly replace genuine interpersonal relationships, remains an open question.
The price range of the device is also not negligible. The basic version costs around 15,100 euros, while the most expensive packages reach a price of up to 125,000 euros. Despite the high price, interest in the huge Chinese market is not waning. The company has already recorded more than 13,000 pre-orders from customers who want to welcome this unusual artificial companion into their homes.
