Firefox gets its biggest overhaul since 2021

Mozilla is with version Firefox 157 has introduced the biggest UI overhaul since the 2021 Proton design. The project was codenamed Nova during development, and the changes are now rolling out to users on desktop and mobile. Firefox has been given more rounded tabs, a redesigned address bar, new icons, different spacing, and a refreshed color palette. Mozilla wants to unify the browser's look across platforms by using the same design logic.

A more useful feature is the return of Compact Mode. This reduces the height of tabs and toolbars, leaving more space for the website. There is also an automatic compact mode that can be turned on on smaller screens. Users have missed this feature a lot, so its return will definitely increase their confidence.

Mozilla has also expanded its customization options. It has added a new theme selection system, more light and dark versions, and wallpapers, and the homepage can be more finely edited and frequently used shortcuts can be pinned to it. Firefox also retains support for vertical tabs and a sidebar, which plays a larger role in the new design.

The redesign alone probably won't convince Chrome users to switch browsers overnight. What's more important is that Firefox looks less dated after several years, without Mozilla sacrificing the flexibility that keeps some users using it in the first place.
