Why Paris may be the most important AI hub outside Silicon Valley

When it comes to tech hubs, the discussion usually begins and ends in Silicon Valley. While London, Tel Aviv, Beijing, and other cities have emerged as major players in recent decades, a new name is increasingly emerging: Paris.
Why Paris may be the most important AI hub outside Silicon Valley

The French capital is becoming one of the key global centers of artificial intelligence, not just for successful startups, but for a broader ecosystem of research, investment, policy, and business applications of AI.

France has significantly increased its investment in artificial intelligence in recent years. The country is encouraging the development of research centers, infrastructure and domestic companies, with the startup Mistral AI attracting the most attention. In a short time, it has become one of the most serious European competitors to companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind. Their success has shown that Europe can develop its own AI models and not necessarily depend on American giants.

But the story is not just about one company. A broader AI ecosystem is emerging in Paris, involving research institutions, venture capital funds, large companies, and government support.

Europe is becoming more confident

For many years, it was believed that European startups often left for the US after their first successes, seeking capital and faster growth. This is gradually changing. More and more European founders are building companies at home and trying to develop them in the European market. Paris is becoming one of the most important locations for companies that want to stay in Europe but at the same time play the global game. This means that AI development no longer necessarily moves to California. Part of the future of artificial intelligence is increasingly taking shape in Europe as well.

VivaTech is becoming the European UI platform

An important example of this shift is the VivaTech event. What began as a European startup fair years ago is now one of the most important global events for artificial intelligence and innovation. The event brings together founders, investors, regulators, researchers and representatives of large corporations.

This year's tenth edition of VivaTech will focus specifically on the issues shaping the AI industry today:

  • infrastructure,
  • cybersecurity,
  • the use of AI in companies,
  • regulation,
  • the future of agent-based artificial intelligence.

This shows that the discussion about artificial intelligence is increasingly moving from experimenting with chatbots to serious business and social issues.

One of Paris's greatest strengths is that it is not just a startup hub. The city is home to European regulators, leading companies, research institutions, investors and tech entrepreneurs. This combination creates an environment where discussions are not only about how to develop AI, but also about how to use it, regulate it and integrate it into the economy.

This is a significant difference from Silicon Valley, where the technology perspective often dominates. Paris is trying to bring together the technological, business and social aspects of AI.

Who will shape the next phase of AI?

Behind it all lies a bigger question: who will set the rules for the next phase of artificial intelligence? For years, the answer was almost self-evident – American tech companies. But today it is becoming clear that Europe also wants to actively participate in shaping the future of AI.

Paris is therefore not only becoming important because of startups or investments. It is becoming a place where ideas are formed about what artificial intelligence should be and who should have an influence on its development.
