OpenAI claims to have solved a century-old mathematical puzzle

Researchers at OpenAI have announced a groundbreaking result in the field of cutting-edge mathematics. Their technology is said to have successfully solved the Navier-Stokes equations, one of the seven most famous and unsolved mathematical challenges of the millennium. A cash prize of €840,000 is being offered for each officially confirmed solution to each challenge.

To analyze in detail the complex calculations that describe the behavior of liquids and gases, they used a completely new system that surpasses their OpenAI GPT-6 Astra model in terms of performance. A network of 10,000 smart agents processed the task for exactly 88 hours. Their calculations suggest that these equations fail under certain extreme conditions, as the speed of the fluid increases to infinity in theory. It took OpenAI GPT-6 Astra an additional 17 hours to verify the entire process.

Despite the excitement, the event was met with a fair amount of public skepticism. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster of New York University pointed out an odd timing. OpenAI embarked on the project at the same time that he and a researcher from rival company Anthropic were preparing to publish their own progress. Because they stored their working data in the OpenAI Codex service, questions arose about possible unauthorized access to other people's findings.

OpenAI has strongly denied any unauthorized use of other people's material. They have only admitted that they were prompted to take action by rumors about the progress of other research teams. OpenAI, which is preparing to issue shares and could reach a market value of around 840 billion euros, does not intend to accept the announced cash prize. Despite all the open questions, this case clearly shows how rapidly artificial intelligence is encroaching on the field of scientific research.
