Europe gets an open source alternative to Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace
Europe has a new open-source office productivity platform that aims to offer an alternative to the popular Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace services. The new solution, called Office.eu, is designed as a comprehensive productivity and collaboration environment for businesses and organizations.
The platform combines several key tools for everyday work. It allows users to create and edit documents, manage email, use a calendar, and communicate within teams. It also includes services for file storage and project collaboration.
Office.eu is partly built on the open source Nextcloud platform, which is already well-known in Europe as a cloud storage and collaboration solution. With this approach, developers are building a system based on open technologies and adaptable to different organizations.
One of the main goals of the project is digital sovereignty. User data is stored on servers within the European Union, which means it is subject to European data protection laws and rules, including the GDPR. This approach is intended to give organizations greater control over their information.
The company developing the platform was founded in 2024, and the service itself began operating in early 2026. It is expected that interest in such solutions could grow, especially among European companies and organizations looking for alternatives to large technology providers.
By launching the Office.eu platform, Europe wants to strengthen its digital independence and encourage the use of open source solutions, which could allow it to compete with global software providers.
