A €3 USB stick gives old computers a new lease of life

Old computers often end up in a drawer or on the scrapyard, even though they still work. A new project from Google and Back Market offers a very cheap solution. A USB stick with ChromeOS Flex, which can give outdated devices a new lease of life.
A €3 USB stick gives old computers a new lease of life

Google and Back Market have launched an interesting initiative to extend the life of older computers. The solution is simple. A special USB stick with the ChromeOS Flex operating system already installed. The device costs around 3 euros and is aimed primarily at users who want to reuse their old computers.

ChromeOS is known as a lightweight operating system that doesn't require powerful hardware to run. This makes it suitable for older laptops and desktops that have trouble with newer versions of other operating systems. By installing ChromeOS Flex, such devices can once again become usable for everyday tasks such as browsing the web or using online services.

The USB stick acts as a ready-made installation media. The user simply plugs it into the computer and begins the operating system installation process. This eliminates the need to manually create a bootable USB media, which is often a complicated process for many users.

The idea behind the project is based on the fact that many computers become obsolete primarily due to software, rather than hardware failure. Although the devices still work, users often stop using them because the operating system no longer receives updates or security support. By installing a “lighter” system, such devices can be reused for many years.

The project is currently in its initial phase as a pilot program. The first batch includes approximately 3,000 USB sticks that will be available to users. If there is sufficient interest, production could be increased in the future.

The initiative also has an environmental aspect, as it encourages the reuse of computer equipment and reduces the amount of electronic waste. Instead of buying new devices, users can upgrade their existing computers with a new operating system and continue to use them.
